My friend, who rarely leaves Riverside, couldn’t stop marveling at the pure darkness, the night sky, or the heat, rolling down the window and sticking his head outside as the hot miles rolled by.

In the remote parts of the Mojave, the night sky glittered with a canopy of stars, and it was so hot I could have slept comfortably outdoors without a blanket or even a sheet. With the instinct of a long-time desert dweller, I drove at night as a safety measure against the extreme June heat. It was the starting leg of a 2,000-mile journey to Minneapolis to visit my daughter and toddler grandsons.

Last month, just as summer was officially beginning and temperatures soared into the triple digits in the inland region, I made this journey in my 2005 RAV4 with my cat, an auto mechanic friend and a lot of trust in a car with 230,000 miles on its engine.
